Matija Ban, age 86 of Eastlake, passed away July 30th, 2026 with his family by his side. He was born June 9th, 1940 in Tomasnica, Croatia to the late Mate and Ana Ban.
Mate worked hard throughout his life as both a coal miner and a machinist before retiring. He courageously brought his family to America in search of a better life and greater opportunities. He held a quiet strength and showed kindness and took great pride in his family. He especially cherished spending time with his grandchildren, who brought him tremendous happiness. He could often be found outdoors tending to his garden and plants, keeping his yard beautiful.
Mate was the loving husband of Danica Ban for 54 years; beloved father of John (Ann) Ban, and Nick (Natalie) Ban; cherished Didi of Helena, Mate, and Isabella Ban; brother of the late Ivan Ban, Stjepan Ban, Josip Ban and Dora Ljubenko; uncle to many nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, August 6th, 2026 at St. Paul Croatian Church, 1369 East 40th Street, Cleveland. Entombment to follow at All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Twp.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Jeff Monreal Funeral Home of Painesville.
