Jay Mahoney, age 67 of Mentor, peacefully passed away August 28th, 2026 at home surrounded by his family. He was born October 23rd, 1958 in Cleveland to loving parents Jay and Geraldine Mahoney.
Jay retired in 2019 from Harshaw/BASF in Beachwood after 40 years of service.
Jay was a former Scout Master of Troop 306. He mentored many young men to become Eagle Scouts, including his two beloved sons (Jason & Russell) and his dear nephew (Michael). His hobbies included hanging out with his seven grandkids, golfing, fishing and being able to go on his dream trip to Alaska in June.
Jay was the loving husband and best friends for 40 years to Gina Mahoney (nee Leanza); beloved father of Jason (Leeanne) Mahoney, Stephanie (Mike) Anderson, and Russell (Caitlin) Mahoney; dearest papa/new grandpa of Kendel Mahoney, Mikael, Sadie, Micah, and Scarlett Anderson, Jayce and Jasper Mahoney; cherished son of Geri and the late Jay Mahoney; brother of Bryan (Monica) Mahoney, Rich (Tracy-deacesed) Mahoney, Steve (Angela) Mahoney, Dean (Jan) Mahoney, and the late Danny Mahoney; brother in law of Michael (Terry) Rhea, and Cathy (Paul) Zanella; uncle to many nieces and nephews including the late Justin Mahoney.
The Mahoney family will receive family and friends from 3:00 – 7:00 PM Friday, September 4th, 2026 at Jeff Monreal Funeral Home, 1000 Mentor Ave., Painesville. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 5th, 2026 at St. John Vianney Church, 7575 Bellflower Rd., Mentor.

He was the kind of man who never sought the spotlight, yet his kindness left lasting marks on everyone around him. Through the Boy Scouts, he guided young men on the path to becoming Eagle Scouts—patiently teaching, encouraging, and showing them what responsibility and character look like in action. He also helped care for the campground itself, putting in the steady, unseen work that made those outdoor experiences possible for so many.
That same spirit of helpfulness extended far beyond Scouting. Neighbors knew they could count on him for snow removal and lawn care,etc. no matter the weather or the hour. Friends of friends found the same willingness in him; if someone needed a hand, he was there. He cared for his mother and stayed present for his family in countless practical and loving ways.
Above all, he was a devoted husband, a wonderful father, grandfather, a loyal brother, and a cherished uncle. His life was defined by showing up—for his family, for the Scouts, for the campground, and for anyone who needed help.
In the quiet ways he served, he taught us what it means to leave a place better than you found it. His example of generosity and steady care will continue to guide those who knew him. He will be deeply missed.

Mr. Mahoney was such a large part of my young adulthood. He cared for me and all my fellow scouts as if we were sons of his. He taught us how to be men, how to respect each other and nature. I have a hundred stories of him that will live with me until its time for me to cross over the bridge as well. May the Great Scout Master of all scouts be with you until we meet again.

I am extremely sorry for your loss of John “Jay” Mahoney. I have know him since I started working at Engelhard in June of 1994 as a temp, later hired in 1998 as a permanent employee. Jay was always helpful to me and he became a good friend of mine over almost 15 years of working together out in Beachwood, Ohio. We shared countless laughs during that time. He was a great man to many and will be sorely missed. I am deeply saddened by his passing. He called me “The O-Man” and i gladly accepted this nickname. Oliver.
This truly breaks my heart. I have so many fond memories of Jay and feel incredibly fortunate to have had the privilege of knowing him. I had the pleasure of working with him, playing golf with him, and sharing countless great stories about kids and grandkids.
Jay had a personality that could light up an entire room, and his warmth, humor, and genuine kindness always left an impression on everyone around him. I will always cherish the memories and laughs we shared.
I am so very sorry for your loss. Jay will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
I would like to express my deepest condolences to the Mahoney Family. As a coworker of mine for over 30 years, Jay and I immediately became good friends. He was like the brother I never had. He was ALWAYS there to help with any issues we had at work. I enjoyed golfing with him, both of our fathers and our sons over the years. He was a man of integrity, honesty, loyalty and respectfulness. I am happy that he was able to enjoy several years of his retirement with family and friends. I will never forget the memories I experienced with him as well. Play good golf in heaven brother Jay.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved ReStore volunteer, Jay.
In just a few short months, Jay contributed more than 400 hours of his time to Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity. But his impact here went far beyond the number of hours he volunteered.
Jay quickly became a cherished part of our ReStore family. He came in with a smile on his face, a willingness to help and a genuine passion for working alongside and helping our other volunteers. Whether he was lending a hand in our wood shop, working in the Ready Room or simply sharing a conversation, Jay was someone people truly enjoyed being around.
More than anything, we will remember the kindness and generosity he brought with him each time he volunteered. He gave so much of his time to Habitat, and we feel incredibly fortunate that we had the opportunity to know him.
Jay will be sorely missed by our staff, volunteers and everyone whose path crossed his at ReStore. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and all those who loved him.
Thank you, Jay, for the hundreds of hours you gave, the people you helped and the warmth you brought to our Habitat family. You made a difference here, and you will not be forgotten.
I want to take a moment to express my sympathies to the entire Mahoney family. I will always cherish the time I spent with Mr. Mahoney and the memories I have of him as my Scoutmaster. He cared deeply about his family, his community, and each of his Scouts.
I still remember his surprise and humility when I chose him to receive my Eagle Scout Mentor Pin. Lending a helping hand or offering a gentle nudge wasn’t something that felt special to him, it was who he was. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace, Mr. Mahoney.

He frequently went out of his way to help his colleagues, always looking out for others. I fondly remember the wonderful conversations we shared behind the building.
