Jean was a wonderful person. I’m so happy to have known her and traveled with her and other family to Slovenia. I will miss her.

I’m so happy I was able to connect with Jean when I did. I tried calling at least once a week. She and I both loved reminiscing about our childhood, our school days, our boyfriends, and especially our fun times at Skateland in Oakland. It was good to hear her laugh as it seemed to make her forget the pain. I looked forward to those little visits and tried to think of different subjects that would make her laugh. Then last week when I called at my usual time, there was no answer. The phone rang and rang but no answer. I thought I surely dialed the wrong number so I tried again but, again there was no answer. I knew I probably had my last conversation with Jean. Rest in Peace, Jean.

    Love,

  6. I am going to be so lost without my sister, Jean, in my life. She was not just a dear sister, but my BFF, confidante and therapist. Since she was born 6 minutes before me, she insisted she was the boss. Indeed, she was!

I never wanted to lose her, but the day she asked me to let her go, I had to tell her “Yes”. It was so hard, but I no longer wanted her to be in pain and suffer.

This year, 2024, was to be our year. We had plans to get together and have fun times. But, ALS shattered them; I guess God had His plans for her as well.

I truly will miss Jean. She was so much a part of my life. My heart is broken. The only consolation is knowing she is free of pain and with our loved ones. I will forever love her and hope she will be with me in spirit until we meet again.

Jean and my late husband, Bob Yingling, were friends from elementary school days into their late years. Bob was always glad to get a letter or call from Jean. She was a lovely, caring person. Her loving family has my sincere sympathy. She is resting in peace.

  9. SO FORTUNATE TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO COMMUNICATE FREQUENTLY WITH JEAN THE PAST TWO+ YEARS WHILE I WAS ENDURING SEVERAL CANCER SURGERIES. SHE WAS ALWAYS SO CONCERNED WITH MY HEALTH, GIVING ME ENCOURAGEMENT. ALL THE TIME, I WAS NOT AWARE OF HER OWN PROBLEMS WITH ASL. THE LAST FEW MONTHS SAW HER RAPID DECLINE. AND I WAS DEVASTATED BY HER LAST E-MAIL WHEN SHE SAID “THIS WILL BE MY LAST…..” REST, REST MY DEAR.

  10. I have many memories of Jean, my cousin. All the many adventures we shared. 135 years ago today is the day of the 1889 Johnstown Flood. 35 years ago Jean and I attended many of the dedications and advents commemorating 100 anniversary of the flood.I remember when she stayed with me, while doing her genealogy. She would be at the library when it opened and leave when it closed. She became a detective of her research. Some secrets were revealed. We did many things together. Jean and Joan are the sisters I never had. The last memory I have, is the cry of her excruciating pain from the ALS. REST IN PIECE JEAN

  11. I was saddened to learn of Jean’s passing. We communicated over the years regarding our common Block ancestor. She was certainly a wealth of knowledge and a genealogy buff. I am happy I had a chance to become acquainted with her, if only by email. She will be missed. My deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to Jean’s family. She was a wonderful person.

    Joan and Family,

I just today saw the posting on the Harris Funeral Home site in Johnstown.

My deepest sympathy to you and the family. Both Jean and you shared the same birthday as Bobby, and she would always reach out to me on that day. I had no idea Jean was ill. I always loved to hear her stories of hiking the Appalachian Trail and skydiving. She was a very courageous lady. Jean always made sure the Block family reunions happened every year so everyone would have fond family memories.

Your dad, Uncle Ted, gave Bobby our start in building our home. Such a gentle soul he was.

Her spirit will forever remain in our hearts. May she rest in peace.
